Developing custom themes in QuickPlace is a powerful capability that no serious QuickPlace implementation can do without. All of the custom HTML tags and their various parameters, however, can be a bit confusing both to the new developer and seasoned web designer. And, it does take considerable time to perfect a custom theme, with all the uploading, tweaking, previewing, etc.

The definitive reference to custom themes is the IBM Redbook, Customizing QuickPlace. This book was co-authored by one of SNAPPS' Senior Consultants Viktor Krantz; in fact Viktor wrote the chapter on themes.

The two major "time sinks" associated with custom theme development are getting the tags right and previewing the work. Using the "ThemeMaker" extension, developers can easily create perfectly formatted QuickPlace Skin Components the first time. Two NEW features are QuickPlace code snippets and a QuickPlace Tag Library (above image - a tag library lets you type ahead while the code follows your typing)! And using the "ThemePreviewer" component, developers can preview their theme work outside QuickPlace without ever having to upload the theme.
